History:
Archibald Stansfeld Belaney (Grey Owl) was born on September 18, 1888 in Hastings, Sussex. He moved to Canada in March of 1906. His childhood dream was to live in the wild like an Indian.
In 1931 Archie moved to Riding Mountain National Park as a naturalist with Canadian National Park Services. After a short period of time he moved to Ajawaan Lake, Prince Albert National Park. Grey Owl lived here at Beaver Lodge. A home he shared with his beavers “Jelly Roll” and “Rawhide“, which included an underwater entrance for these friends.
Still today Beaver Lodge is a 20km hike or canoe paddle (one way) from the nearest parking lot. (Visit Grey Owl's Beaver Lodge)
“Far enough away to gain seclusion, yet within reach of those who genuine interest prompts them to make the trip. Beaver Lodge exends a welcome to you if your heart is right”, -Grey Owl.
Grey Owl died on April 13, 1938, and is buried near the cabin at Ajawaan Lake.
